Individual Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis

I work in a contemporary and collaborative manner to creatively build a foundation from which to establish greater freedom from the “there and then” as it plays out in the “here and now”. While understanding the past is often necessary in order to grapple with the wounds that affect our choices and relationships, in treatment with me, the focus is on enlivening your future and expanding your options rather than merely digging up relics.

Although difficult and challenging at times, psychoanalytic treatment inspires both change and acceptance as you navigate the world in new, different, and more balanced ways. Psychotherapy occurs at a frequency of one to two sessions per week.

Areas of Expertise:

  • Enduring mind-body concerns such as chronic pain, medical problems, and functional disorders

  • Substance misuse and eating disorders

  • Chronic or episodic depression and anxiety

  • Childhood attachment trauma or abuse

  • Adult-onset trauma or abuse

  • Navigating identity, transitions, and the social:

    • Racial trauma and oppression

    • “Multiple jeopardy”/intersectional marginalization

    • LGBTQIA+2S, coming out, and compulsory gender and heterosexuality

    • Immigration trauma

  • Self-authorization and trust following cult indoctrination

Psychoanalysis of Adults

There are times when you may benefit from the spaciousness and regularity of more frequent contact. Without the transformative effects of a more intensive therapeutic relationship and an inquiry taking place within the frame of daily life, trauma-based survival states and entrenched symptoms may flourish despite trying your best to meet the demands of daily living.

Patterns of behavior that repeat, and the internal clanging of distress, may feel and be, respectfully, beyond you, or truly, any of us, to change on your own. While psychoanalysis cannot change the facts of the past, it can make significant differences to how you live your life now and how you move into the future with greater inspiration and freedom.

Couples Therapy

In my work with couples, I approach the “client” as the relationship between the couple and the interactions, emotional atmosphere, and space for recognition and difference that the couple has co-created. I welcome working with LGBTQIA2S+ and heterosexual partnerships as well as couples who want to deepen intimacy, who are ambivalent or confused about staying together, or who wish to negotiate separation.

Increased capacity within the “client-couple” to respectfully manage differences/change, disappointment, conflict, desire and need, betrayal, mourning, and most importantly, the presence of two separate but interconnected subjectivities can result in deeply meaningful experiences of mature love.

In cases of negotiation separation, we will address respectful decoupling, effective and crucial communication, and co-parenting strategies, as well as the development of boundaries to decrease enmity, grievance, and hostility.

Group Therapy

Periodically, I offer psycho-education groups and process groups. Topics have included living with chronic pain, acute injury, and navigating trauma, grief, and loss.

Behavioral & Psychological Evaluation

I accept referrals from individuals who are seeking in-depth understanding of psychological distress including diagnosis, assessment of functioning, and comprehensive treatment recommendations. I also collaborate with primary care physicians to evaluate the impact of a person’s state of mind on medical treatment, prognosis, and everyday functioning.

How we respond when the storm strikes is up to us. How we live in the aftermath of tragedy and heartache, that’s within our control. And it’s in these moments, through our actions, that we often see the glimpse of what makes life worth living in the first place.
